Trying to upgrade to Windows 11 but I’m stuck on the TPM requirement?

Post by 3403ldprrb »

Trying to upgrade to Windows 11 but I’m stuck on the TPM requirement. The PC Health Check app says “This PC must support TPM 2.0” but my computer is only a few years old. I’ve gone into the BIOS and enabled TPM, but now I’m getting error code 0x80070490. Is there a specific setting I’m missing, or is my hardware actually incompatible? Any help getting past this check would be great.

Can confirm. You could also try clearing your Windows Update cache, as sometimes old update files interfere. Another option is to check if there's a specific "Intel PTT" or "AMD fTPM" setting in your BIOS that needs enabling, not just a general TPM toggle.

Yeah this is common. Hey there, that TPM check can be a real headache! Let's see if we can sort it out. That error code often means Windows Update isn't finding the TPM even though it's enabled. Could you double-check in your BIOS that it's set to TPM 2.0 and not 1.2? Also, sometimes a setting called "PTT" for Intel or "fTPM" for AMD needs to be enabled instead of a discrete TPM module. Feel free to share your motherboard or PC model, and I can try to help you find the exact setting. Good luck!

Yeah, You could also try clearing the TPM from within Windows security settings, then re-enabling it in BIOS. Another option is checking for a BIOS update from your manufacturer, as that sometimes resolves TPM detection issues.

Oh, and did you also make sure to clear the TPM from within Windows after enabling it in the BIOS?

This happened to me. I had to go back into the BIOS and also enable a setting called "Secure Boot" before it finally worked. Let me know if that works.

I had the same problem. After enabling Secure Boot, I also had to switch my BIOS from Legacy/CSM mode to UEFI to clear that error.

Yeah, that's the fix. Also, make sure you're saving the BIOS changes and restarting before you run the upgrade again.

Same here. I had the same problem. After enabling TPM, I also had to go in and specifically enable Secure Boot in my BIOS before it finally worked.

This solution worked on my system too. Thanks!
