You could also try creating a full system image backup using a tool like Macrium Reflect Free for total peace of mind. Another option is to just manually copy your Documents and Desktop folders to an external drive. Let me know if that works.

Yeah, Macrium is solid. A quick tip: double-check your backup by mounting the image file to make sure your Documents folder is really in there before you proceed.
