So basically, A system image backup is a solid safety net, but for extra peace of mind, I'd definitely manually copy that Documents folder to a separate location on your external drive as well. That way your most important files are in two places if the upgrade goes sideways.

This. Yeah, that backup is a solid start. I'd also run the Windows Update troubleshooter first, as that error is often tied to a driver conflict.

I’m trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11, but the setup keeps failing with error code 0xC1900101. My main worry is my files. I created a system image backup to an external drive, but is that enough? Should I also manually copy my Documents folder? I don’t want to lose years of photos and work files if something goes wrong during the rollback.

I had the same problem. That error is a real headache, but your system image is a solid backup—I’d still manually copy your Documents folder for extra peace of mind.

This. You could also try running the Windows Update troubleshooter first, as that specific error can sometimes be a driver conflict.

Thanks! I ran the troubleshooter, but now my computer says it doesn't have enough free space to upgrade.

Yeah, that's a common one. Try clearing out your Downloads folder and emptying the Recycle Bin first, that often frees up enough space.

Agreed. I had the same problem. That error is often a driver conflict, so I had to update my graphics driver before it would finally go through.
