I’m trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11, but the setup keeps failing with error code 0xC1900101. My main worry is my files. I ran the built-in backup tool, but it felt confusing and I’m not sure it got everything from my Documents and Desktop. Before I try again, what’s the most reliable way to do a full backup? I don’t want to lose any personal photos or work projects.

Can confirm. You could also try creating a system image backup using the Control Panel version of the tool—it's a bit more thorough. Another option is to just manually copy your important Documents and Desktop folders to an external drive for peace of mind.

This. You could also use a dedicated backup program like Macrium Reflect Free for a more set-and-forget image. Another option is to simply upload your crucial files to a cloud service like OneDrive as a quick extra safety net.

Yeah, and if you're using OneDrive, double-check that the Desktop and Documents folders are actually set to sync in its settings—sometimes they're not by default.

Can confirm. I had the same problem with that error. What finally worked for me was creating a full system image backup to an external drive using the Windows 7 Backup tool—it's still in Windows 10 and saved everything. Hope that helps.

You could also try using a third-party tool like Macrium Reflect Free, which many find simpler for a full disk image. Another option is to just manually copy your crucial Documents and Desktop folders to a USB drive for peace of mind.

Agreed. I had the same problem with that error. Manually copying my important folders to an external drive was what finally gave me the peace of mind to push through the upgrade. Good luck!

This. You could also try using a dedicated backup tool like Macrium Reflect Free for a more straightforward, complete image of your drive. Another option is to temporarily move your essential files to a cloud service like OneDrive, which often syncs your Desktop and Documents folders already. Let me know if that works.

Yeah, and if you use an external drive, just make sure it has enough free space for all your Documents and Desktop stuff.
