I’m stuck trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11?

I’m stuck trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11. The PC Health Check app says my system doesn’t meet the requirements because “Secure Boot” isn’t enabled. I went into my BIOS (UEFI) but the option is greyed out and I can’t turn it on. My motherboard is an ASUS Z170-A. Has anyone else solved this? Do I need to reset my BIOS settings or change something with my disk partitions first? Any help would be appreciated.

First, you'll likely need to reset your BIOS to factory defaults, which often unlocks the Secure Boot option. Before you do that, check if your disk is using GPT partitioning and not MBR, as Secure Boot requires GPT. You can verify this by opening Disk Management and looking at your system drive. If it's MBR, you'll need to convert it, which is a bit more involved. For your ASUS board, also make sure you're running the latest BIOS version from their website, as older versions might have bugs with that setting. Hope that helps.

This happened to me on a similar board. I had to go into the BIOS and switch the system from "Other OS" to "Windows UEFI" mode first, which then unlocked the Secure Boot option.

Agreed. Also, make sure you're in Advanced Mode in the BIOS to see all the available settings.

You could also try resetting your BIOS to factory defaults, as that sometimes unlocks greyed-out options.

Same here. Yeah, that's a solid suggestion. Just make sure to note down any custom BIOS settings first, like XMP profiles, so you can reapply them after the reset.

This. Also, have you checked if your TPM is enabled in the BIOS, as that's another common requirement that can be tricky on older boards?

Agreed. You could also try resetting your BIOS to factory defaults, as that can sometimes unlock greyed-out security settings.

Can confirm. Yeah, and after you reset, make sure you're saving changes and exiting properly—sometimes it takes a full reboot for the setting to become available.
