I’m trying to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11, but the setup keeps failing with error code 0xC1900101. My main worry is my files. I did a full backup to an external drive using File History before starting, but is that actually enough? I’ve heard some people lose app settings or game saves. Should I be making a system image instead, or is that overkill? I don’t want to start over from scratch.

Yeah this is common. First, that error often points to a driver or software conflict. Try updating your BIOS and all drivers from your PC manufacturer's website, then temporarily disable any antivirus before running the upgrade again.

Your File History backup is good for personal files, but you're right—it won't save installed apps or some settings. For total safety, creating a system image is the best way to guarantee you can roll back to exactly how your PC is now.

It's not overkill if you're worried. Use the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" tool in Control Panel to make the system image to your external drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, you can restore everything completely.

Once that image is done, you can attempt the upgrade with much more peace of mind. Good luck

Agreed. I had the same problem. That error popped up for me too, and my File History backup was actually enough to get my personal files back, but I did have to reinstall a few programs.

That backup should cover your personal files, but for game saves, are they stored in your user folders like Documents, or within the specific game's installation directory?

This. Since you've already backed up, to be extra safe, have you checked if any of your important games use cloud saves through Steam or another platform?
